Navratri 2026 begins on Sunday 11 October and runs to Dussehra on Tuesday 20 October. Ten days of Garba nights, family gatherings and, for a lot of households in HRM, ten days of fasting — which changes what a cake is actually for.
Nine Nights, Then Dussehra
Halifax has real Navratri activity now. The Indian Festivals Club of Nova Scotia runs Garba and Dandiya nights through the period, and between those, the pujas at home and the birthdays that happen to fall in mid-October, it is one of the busier social stretches of the autumn here. Dussehra on the 20th is when the fasting ends and the eating properly begins.
Here is the part most bakeries will not tell you: if you are keeping the Navratri vrat, our cake is not vrat food. A celebration cake is built on wheat flour, and most people fasting through Navratri avoid grains entirely, along with onion and garlic. We are not going to sell you something described as a Navratri cake and let you find that out afterwards. What we bake is for Dussehra, for the Garba night afterwards, for the half of the family who are not fasting, and for the birthdays that land in that window regardless.
Where we do fit cleanly is the eggless question. No eggs are used anywhere in our kitchen, so nothing needs checking before a cake goes on a table during a religious period — it is vegetarian by default. It does contain dairy, which is fine for most people observing Navratri but means it is not vegan. For Dussehra itself the usual orders are mithai flavours: rasmalai with saffron and pistachio, gulab jamun folded through cardamom sponge, or pistachio finished in festive gold.

Three to four days is comfortable, and a week or more for a custom-decorated centrepiece. Mid-October runs straight into Diwali preparation, so the kitchen fills early through that stretch. Same-day is often still possible from whatever we can manage that morning.
