Festival Cakes & Hampers in Halifax
Halifax celebrates a lot more than it used to. We bake eggless cakes and build gift hampers for the festivals HRM actually keeps — Diwali, Karwa Chauth, Eid, Lunar New Year, Vaisakhi, Holi, Christmas and the rest — with the dates checked against what applies here in Nova Scotia, not what an Indian calendar prints.
One Kitchen, Everybody's Calendar
The single most useful thing about a 100% eggless kitchen is how few conversations it requires. No eggs are used in any recipe, so the cake is vegetarian by default — which matters at a Diwali table, during a vrat, at an Eid gathering and at any family event where somebody does not eat eggs. It does contain dairy, so it is vegetarian rather than vegan, and we say so plainly rather than letting anyone assume.
The harder part is dates, and it is the part most gifting sites get wrong for Canada. A tithi begins and ends at one astronomical instant worldwide, so translated into Atlantic Time some festivals land a calendar day earlier here than in India — Karwa Chauth 2026 is 28 October for us and 29 October there. Eid moves with the local moon sighting and cannot be fixed in advance at all. We track what applies in Halifax and publish it, and if your family keeps the Indian date instead, we bake to that.
What we make changes with the occasion rather than the label. Diwali and Bhai Dooj are usually mithai-flavoured cakes — rasmalai, gulab jamun, pistachio — often inside a hamper with dry fruits and a card. Karwa Chauth is a cake and fresh roses timed to moonrise. Eid tends toward a centrepiece cake for a large family gathering. Lunar New Year leans red and gold. Christmas and New Year run to dry loaf cakes and boxes for neighbours and offices.
Festival weeks are the busiest stretches of our year and they go to whoever asked first. Three to four days ahead is comfortable for a standard order and a week or more for a custom-decorated centrepiece or several matching hampers. Same-day orders are still often possible even inside a festival week, and late-night delivery around 11:30 PM is available if the gift is meant to be a surprise.

Which festivals do you make cakes for?
All of them, within what a bakery can do. The regular ones are Diwali and Bhai Dooj, Karwa Chauth, Navratri and Dussehra, Raksha Bandhan, Holi, Vaisakhi, Lohri and Makar Sankranti, Bandi Chhor Divas and Guru Nanak Gurpurab, Ramadan and both Eids, Lunar New Year, Easter, Christmas and New Year. If your festival is not on that list, ask — the cake is built to your occasion either way.
Why do your festival dates sometimes differ from Indian calendars?
Because a tithi starts and ends at one astronomical instant worldwide, and converting that instant into Atlantic Time can land it on a different calendar date. Karwa Chauth 2026 falls on 28 October in Halifax and 29 October in India for exactly that reason. Both are correct. Tell us which date your family keeps and we bake to it.
When is Diwali 2026?
Sunday 8 November 2026, with Dhanteras on Friday the 6th, Govardhan Puja on Monday the 9th and Bhai Dooj on Tuesday the 10th. The Halifax Sikh community marks Bandi Chhor Divas on the same day, 8 November.
When is Eid 2027, and can you confirm a date in advance?
Not exactly, and no one honestly can. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around Monday 8 February, with Eid al-Fitr around Tuesday 9 March and Eid al-Adha around Sunday 16 May. All of these depend on the local moon sighting and can shift by a day. Book on the expected date and tell us if it moves — we would rather adjust than have you miss it.
Are your festival cakes eggless and vegetarian?
Yes. No eggs are used anywhere in our kitchen, so there is no cross-contact at all and every cake is vegetarian. They do contain dairy such as butter, cream and milk, so they are not vegan.
Can you deliver on the festival day itself?
Usually, yes, depending on availability — we deliver seven days a week across Dartmouth, Halifax, Bedford and nearby communities, including evening slots and a late-night option around 11:30 PM. Pickup in Dartmouth is often easiest on the day itself, when roads and schedules are busiest.
How far ahead should I order for a festival?
Three to four days for a standard cake or hamper, and a week or more for a custom-decorated centrepiece or matching hampers for an office. Diwali weekend and the Christmas season are the two fullest stretches of the year and both fill early. Same-day is often still possible from whatever the kitchen can manage that morning.
Do you do corporate festival gifting?
Yes — matching hampers and boxes for staff, clients and office celebrations, for Diwali, Christmas, Eid or Lunar New Year. Keeping the contents identical and neutral works better than personalising each one, and everything we bake being eggless covers vegetarian colleagues without a separate conversation. Confirm numbers and the date early; November and December book up weeks ahead.
