Diwali Sweets & Desserts in Halifax & Dartmouth

Diwali in Halifax runs on sweets — a box for every door you visit and a plate for every guest who walks in. Nova Cakes bakes the bakery side of that table: pastries, cup pastries, cupcakes, dry cakes and celebration cakes in rasmalai, gulab jamun and pistachio, all 100% eggless and baked in Dartmouth the week of the festival.

A Bakery's Answer to the Diwali Sweets Table

Traditional Diwali sweets are mithai — barfi, laddoo, kaju katli — and for those the Indian sweet shops and grocers around HRM are the right stop. What we bake is the other half of the table, the part that has grown up beside mithai over the last decade: the same festival flavours carried into cake. A rasmalai cupcake, a slice of gulab jamun cake, a cup pastry layered with cream. They sit next to the mithai box rather than replacing it, and they are usually what the younger half of the family reaches for first.

For guests at home, pastries and cup pastries are the easiest thing to serve: one portion each, nothing to cut, no plates to hunt for, and a cup pastry can be handed to someone standing up with a diya in the other hand. Cupcakes come in boxes of six per flavour, with rasmalai among our premium flavours. For the tea table from Dhanteras through Bhai Dooj, a 350g dry cake — almond and walnut, banana, orange or tutti-frutti — keeps at room temperature for three to four days and outlasts every iced dessert in the house.

For giving, the question is what survives the visit. In visiting season a box sits in a car and then on a hallway table before anyone opens it, so dry cakes and cupcake boxes travel best, while pastries and cup pastries suit a home where they go straight into the fridge. For the main night itself a celebration cake is still the centrepiece — a 500g, 6-inch cake serves four to six and a 1kg cake eight to twelve. If the sweets should look like a present, our Diwali hampers put them on a decorated tray with lights, and for offices we pack matching boxes for every desk.

Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November, with Dhanteras on the 6th, Govardhan Puja on the 9th and Bhai Dooj on the 10th, and Bandi Chhor Divas lands on the same Sunday for Sikh families across HRM. Because no eggs are used anywhere in our kitchen, everything we bake suits vegetarian households and guests with egg allergies. Festival week is the first to fill, so order sweets for visiting days three or four days ahead.

Diwali Sweets in Halifax — FAQs

Where can I buy Diwali sweets in Halifax?

For traditional mithai such as barfi, laddoo and kaju katli, the Indian sweet shops and grocers around HRM are the place to go. For the bakery side — eggless pastries, cup pastries, cupcakes, dry cakes and cakes in Diwali flavours like rasmalai and gulab jamun — Nova Cakes bakes in Dartmouth and delivers across Halifax, Dartmouth and Bedford.

Do you sell mithai like barfi or laddoo?

No. We are a bakery, not a sweet shop, so there is no boxed barfi or laddoo. We bake mithai flavours into cakes, cupcakes and pastries instead, which is why many families order from us alongside a mithai box rather than instead of one.

What Diwali desserts work for a houseful of guests?

Pastries and cup pastries — one portion each, nothing to cut and no plates needed. For a bigger group, mix them with a box or two of cupcakes and a celebration cake for the main moment. Tell us your guest count and we will suggest quantities.

What is a good Diwali sweet to take when visiting?

Something that survives the visit. A 350g dry cake or a box of six cupcakes needs no fridge and handles a car ride and a few hours on a counter. Cream pastries are better for a home where they will go straight into the fridge.

Are your Diwali sweets eggless and vegetarian?

Yes. No eggs are used anywhere in our kitchen, so every item is vegetarian and suits egg allergies. Everything contains dairy — butter, cream and milk — so it is not vegan.

Can you do Diwali sweets for an office?

Yes — cupcake boxes, dry cakes or individual pastries for a team, or matching boxes for clients. Message us with numbers and the date; office orders for festival week should be confirmed early.

How far ahead should I order Diwali sweets?

Three to four days is comfortable for pastries, cupcakes and dry cakes; a week or more for a custom cake or a large office order. Diwali is Sunday 8 November 2026 and that weekend fills first. Same-day is often still possible — message early in the day and we will tell you what the kitchen can do.
