Karwa Chauth is the one festival where getting the time wrong ruins the plan. The fast runs from before sunrise until the moon is sighted, so everything — the puja, the first sip of water, the meal together — hangs off a single moment that is different in every city. Search for it from Halifax and almost every result quotes a moonrise time calculated for northern India, which is roughly an hour out for Nova Scotia. Here is what the evening actually looks like here.

The Date: 28 October in Halifax, 29 October in India

Karwa Chauth 2026 falls on Wednesday 28 October in Halifax and across North America. Indian calendars print Thursday 29 October, and both are correct. The festival is fixed to the Chaturthi tithi of Krishna Paksha in Kartik, and a tithi starts and ends at one astronomical instant worldwide. Convert that instant into Atlantic Time and it lands on the evening of the 28th for us, a calendar day earlier than in India. The same one-day shift happens across the United States and the UK, which is why families here and relatives back home sometimes keep the fast on different days.

If your family follows the Indian date, that is equally valid — plenty of households in Halifax keep the 29th so they are fasting alongside parents in India. Decide which day you are keeping before you book anything, because it changes the delivery date.

• Fast begins: around 7:47 AM Atlantic, after sargi is eaten before dawn
• Sunset: around 6:10 PM
• Puja muhurat: roughly 6:09 PM to 7:31 PM

Treat these as a planning guide rather than a ruling. Moonrise shifts by a few minutes depending on your exact spot in HRM and, more importantly, on what you can actually see — a low moon behind the Dartmouth treeline or a downtown apartment block will appear several minutes later than the astronomical time. If you are in a building with a clear eastern view, you will see it close to the listed time.

Worth knowing for 2026: the full moon falls on 26 October, so on Karwa Chauth the moon is only two days past full. It rises bright and large, and it clears the horizon a little over an hour after sunset rather than the two or three hours you might expect. That is unusually convenient — the wait after dark is short.

Planning the Evening in Nova Scotia

The practical problem for Halifax families is that late October here is nothing like October in Delhi. Sunset is before quarter past six and it is genuinely cold by the time the moon is up. Two things follow. First, if you are planning to view the moon outdoors, pick your spot in daylight — somewhere with a clear eastern horizon, which in HRM usually means the harbour side rather than behind a hill. Second, whatever you are eating afterwards needs to be ready before moonrise, not started after it, because nobody wants to cook at half past seven after eighteen hours without water.

This is also why afternoon gift delivery makes so little sense for this particular festival. A cake dropped off at three o'clock sits in a fridge for four and a half hours. Anything meant to be part of the evening should arrive in the evening, and if it is a surprise it can arrive later still.

Sargi, and the Bit That Is Harder Here

Sargi — the pre-dawn meal traditionally sent by a mother-in-law — is the part that travels worst. In India it arrives as a thali of fruit, dry fruits, mathri and sweets. In Halifax, with family eleven thousand kilometres away, most people assemble it themselves from what the Indian grocers on Ilsley Avenue and in the North End carry, or a partner puts it together the night before. Dry fruits, fresh fruit, something sweet and plenty of water before 7:47 AM is the practical version.
