One of the most common questions customers ask when ordering from a home bakery is: 'What size cake do I need?' Unlike commercial supermarkets that measure cakes by diameter (e.g., 6-inch or 8-inch), many custom and specialty bakers measure cakes by weight (grams and kilograms). Understanding how weight translates into guest portions is key to ensuring everyone gets a slice without ending up with too much leftover cake.

Portion Guide: Weight vs. Servings

Please note that cake servings are always approximate. Slice sizes depend on how the cake is cut (traditional wedges vs. catering-style grids) and how rich the cake is. Here is a general breakdown of our sizes:

  • 500g to 650g Cakes: This is our standard small size. It is perfect for intimate gatherings, small family birthdays, or date nights. It serves approximately 4 to 6 people.
  • 1kg to 1.2kg Cakes: This is our standard medium size. It is ideal for average birthday parties, office celebrations, and family get-togethers. It serves approximately 8 to 12 people.
  • Cupcake Boxes (4 pieces): Great as a small thank-you gift, office treat, or to supplement a main cake. Serves 1 to 4 people.
  • Dry Loaf Cakes (350g): Our tea-time loaves are baked in a rectangular loaf tin. They are designed for slicing and serve 4 to 6 people alongside tea or coffee.

Factors That Affect How Much Cake You Need

When deciding on a size, think about the context of your party. If you are serving a heavy multi-course meal (like a festive Indian dinner), guests will usually prefer smaller slices, meaning a 1kg cake can stretch further. However, if the cake is the main food event at an afternoon kids' party, guests might want larger slices, so sizing up is a safe bet. If you are serving a mix of adults and children, cupcakes are a great side option because they require no cutting or plates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 500g cake enough for a birthday party?

A 500g cake is perfect if you have 4 to 6 guests. If you have 8 or more people attending, we highly recommend upgrading to a 1kg cake to make sure everyone gets a satisfying slice.

How do I cut a cake to maximize portions?

For neat, consistent portions, cut the cake in horizontal rows across the cake, rather than cutting traditional wedges from the center. This is especially helpful for round custom cakes.

Can I order a custom multi-tiered cake?

Yes. For larger events (20+ guests), we can stack cakes to create a multi-tiered design. Message us on WhatsApp to discuss your guest count and design ideas.

Do dry loaf cakes need to be refrigerated?

No. Unlike cream cakes, our 350g dry loaf cakes (like Banana or Almond Walnut) can be kept at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days.
