Festival Calendar for Halifax 2026–2027: Every Date, Checked for Nova Scotia

If you have ever had a parent in India tell you the festival is tomorrow while your phone insists it was yesterday, this is why. A tithi — the lunar day that fixes most Hindu festivals — begins and ends at a single astronomical instant for the whole planet. Only the clock changes. Translate that instant into Atlantic Time and some festivals land a calendar day earlier here than they do in India. Islamic dates work differently again: they depend on a local moon sighting and genuinely cannot be fixed months ahead. Here is the full year for Halifax, with the cases where sources disagree flagged rather than smoothed over.

Two notes on that list. Diwali falling on a Sunday is a piece of luck for anyone hosting — the main night does not collide with a work day. And 8 November carries two celebrations at once in HRM, since the gurdwara on Lucasville Road marks Bandi Chhor Divas the same evening.

November and December are the two busiest gifting months of the year in Halifax, and not only for the obvious reason — office and client gifting runs alongside the Evergreen Festival and eats the same calendar. Both Eid dates carry a real caveat. They are expectations, not fixtures — the local sighting decides, and a one-day shift is normal. If you are planning anything around them, plan for the expected date and stay flexible about the day either side.

Where These Dates Come From

The 2026 Hindu dates follow the festival calendar published by the Vedanta Ashram Society, the Hindu temple serving Halifax, because that is the calendar most local families plan around. Karwa Chauth is not on that calendar, so its date and the Halifax moonrise are taken from panchang calculations for this city and cross-checked against astronomical moonrise data — the two agree to within about six minutes. Islamic dates are the commonly published expectations for Canada and remain subject to local sighting. Sikh dates follow the Nanakshahi calendar. Where sources genuinely disagree, both are listed above rather than one being picked silently.

None of this is a ruling. Plenty of families in Halifax follow their own tradition or their temple's guidance and keep the Indian date deliberately so they are observing alongside relatives at home. That is not a mistake, and it is worth deciding which date your household keeps before booking anything around it.

Ordering Around Festival Weeks

Diwali weekend and the Christmas season are the two fullest stretches of our year, and both fill on a first-asked basis. Three to four days ahead is comfortable for a standard cake or hamper; a week or more if you want a custom-decorated centrepiece or several matching boxes for an office. Same-day orders are often still possible even inside a festival week, though from whatever the kitchen can manage that morning rather than the full list.
