Eggless Baking

Is Eggless Cake Vegan? No — Here's the Difference

Eggless and vegan are not the same thing. Our cakes contain no eggs at all — but they are made with real butter, cream and milk, so they are not vegan.

By Aman, Founder & Head Baker

No — Nova Cakes' cakes are 100% eggless, but they are not vegan, because they contain dairy such as butter, cream and milk. The two words get mixed up all the time, and the difference really matters if you're ordering for someone with a specific diet. Here is exactly what each term means and who our egg-free cakes are right for.

Vegan vs Eggless: What Each Word Means

A vegan cake contains no animal products at all — no eggs, no milk, no butter, no cream and no honey. An eggless cake only promises one thing: no eggs. Dairy is still very much included. In fact, dairy is the heart of how we bake: real butter in the sponges, fresh cream in the frosting, and milk-based Indian desserts like rasmalai folded into our signature flavours. Rasmalai itself is a dairy sweet — soft cheese patties soaked in creamy saffron milk — so a rasmalai cake can never be vegan.

  • Vegan: no animal products of any kind — no eggs, no milk, butter, cream or honey.
  • Eggless (or egg-free): no eggs anywhere in the recipe or the kitchen — but dairy is used.
  • Vegetarian: no meat, fish or eggs — dairy is allowed. Every Nova Cakes cake is vegetarian.

Who Are Eggless Cakes For?

Eggless baking is not a compromise or an afterthought for us — it's the whole bakery. It exists because a lot of people in Halifax, Dartmouth and Bedford genuinely need or prefer cake without eggs:

  • Jain and Hindu vegetarians: many South Asian families follow vegetarian diets that exclude eggs but happily include milk, butter, cream and ghee. Eggless cake is exactly this tradition.
  • People with egg allergies: egg allergy is one of the most common childhood food allergies, and 'egg-free' is usually the word allergy families search for. Eggless and egg-free mean the same thing.
  • Anyone who simply prefers no eggs: some people don't like the taste eggs give a sponge, or want a cake that everyone at a mixed gathering can eat.

What Our Kitchen Does — and Doesn't — Guarantee

On the egg side, our claim is simple and specific: Nova Cakes operates a dedicated no-egg kitchen. No eggs are used in any recipe and no eggs come into the kitchen. That is the exact claim — a dedicated egg-free workspace.

Just as important is what we don't claim. Our kitchen regularly uses dairy and wheat flour, and works with nuts like pistachios and almonds. So our cakes are not suitable for a dairy allergy, a vegan diet, or coeliac/gluten-free needs, and severe nut allergies should read our nut-allergy FAQ before ordering. If you're ordering for a group, tell us about every allergy in the chat and we'll advise honestly on whether our cakes are the right fit.

Ordering for a Vegan Guest?

We'd rather be straight with you than make a sale: we do not currently bake vegan cakes, and an eggless cake will not work for a strictly vegan guest because of the dairy. Our specialty is doing 100% eggless baking really well. If vegan options join the menu in the future, we'll announce it on our Instagram first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is eggless cake vegan?

No. Eggless means the cake contains no eggs, but eggless cakes are normally made with dairy — butter, cream and milk. Vegan means no animal products at all, including dairy and honey. Nova Cakes' cakes are 100% eggless and vegetarian, but not vegan.

Is eggless the same as egg-free?

Yes — they mean the same thing: no eggs. 'Eggless' is the everyday word in South Asian and vegetarian baking, while 'egg-free' is how allergy families usually phrase it. Either way, Nova Cakes bakes in a dedicated no-egg kitchen.

Do Nova Cakes cakes contain dairy?

Yes. We bake with real butter, fresh cream and milk, and signature flavours like rasmalai and gulab jamun are built on milk-based Indian desserts. Our cakes are not dairy-free and not vegan.

Are your cakes safe for someone with an egg allergy?

Our kitchen is a dedicated no-egg kitchen — no eggs are used in any recipe and no eggs come into the workspace. Please still mention the allergy when you order, and tell us about any other allergies (we do use dairy, wheat and nuts) so we can advise honestly.
